This morning I am thinking about how we never know what somebody else is going through.
A couple of weeks ago, I was having a particularly bad day and I had stopped by The Flying Star with B for a bite to eat. There was a man at the table next to us who was obviously making some business calls while we were there. (Someone whom I imagine is wildly more successful in his career than I am.) When I got up to leave, he told me just to leave the high chair there and that he’d put it away for me. It was a simple kindness, but one that came at a moment where it really impacted my day. It didn’t fix my day, but it made me feel cared for.
That guy that cut you off in morning traffic- his mom could be in the hospital. That girl in line in front of you at the store- she could be a new mom who didn’t sleep at all last night. That friendly lady at your gym- she might be suffering from serious depression. That boy that lives across the street- he might be bullied every day at school.
Even the people we think we know can have more going on than we know about.
So be kind today. Be kind to strangers. Be kind to your friends and family. Be kind to yourself.
