You always want to have your containers that have a way to drain as to not cause root rot, so you don’t need to worry about over watering. Not sure about the black spot on the leaves though. Almost sounds like something in the roots. When I put my plants in containers, I like to take a few pieces of broken clay pots and pile them over the drain hole so as to create a pocket for water to drain. Hope this helps.
